Experiment 2 for the biology science project - There is something green on my bread!

Say no to mold! - Air

Background

Imagine you suddenly did not have enough air to breathe! In this biology science project experiment you are going to do just that to mold - you are going to take it's air away!

Let's do science...

The Experiment

Everything that lives needs some sort of air, whether it is oxygen or carbon dioxide. If you take that away, whatever it is won't survive.

The Aim
To see if mold will grow when there is no air available.

Equipment Needed

  • Moldy bread (check out the Growing smelly fluff!! experiment to find out how to get moldy bread.)
  • Fresh bread (at least 2 slices).
  • A thick plastic bag.
  • A vacuum sealer.
  • 2 seal-able containers.

    Method
Each of the 2 containers will have a slice of bread in it, one slice with air, the other without.

  • Take the 2 slices of bread and shake, only once, the moldy bread over them. WARNING: do this in a well ventilated place and do not breathe in too deeply.
  • Place one of the pieces of bread in a plastic packet and seal it with a vacuum sealer. Place it a container and seal it.
  • Place the other piece in another container and seal it – this is the control for the experiment.
  • Place both containers in a dark, warm place.
  • Check them every day and make note of any changes that take place.

    Results
This is what you should see happening:

  • The bread in the vacuum pack, that has no air, will have no, or very little growth compared to the “normal” bread in the other container.

    The Conclusion
By taking air away from where food is, the growth of mold is slowed down or prevented.
