Chemistry Science Fair Project Ideas

What a gas!



As chemistry science fair project ideas go – this one is a gas. No really - I mean it – you get to blow up a balloon with gas that is formed form a chemical reaction. And you can do all this with normal stuff you find in your mom's kitchen – but please, get her permission first...

Let's do science...

The Experiment

The Aim

To test if a gas is one of the products of the chemical reaction between baking soda and vinegar.

Equipment needed

  • A two liter plastic coke bottle.
  • A balloon.
  • Two teaspoons of baking soda.
  • A funnel.
  • A measuring cup.
  • Vinegar.

    Method

  • Put the baking soda into the balloon, using the funnel (see photo above).
  • Pour ¾ of a cup of vinegar into the plastic bottle.
  • Fasten the balloon to the top of the bottle, without letting any baking soda fall into the liquid.
  • Tip the baking soda out into the bottle.

    Results

    The liquid starts to bubble once the baking soda is added. Then the balloon starts to inflate! Check out the pics below...

    Conclusion

    As I said – this is one of those chemistry science fair ideas that is a gas to do...Ok, enough of that, down to business again...

    So what happened?The baking soda mixed with the vinegar and had a chemical reaction. One of the products that was produced was carbon dioxide – yup the gas. The bubbling of the liquid that you saw was this carbon dioxide being released. Because there was more gas in the container, there was an increase in pressure, which means the gas had to go somewhere - so it went into the balloon, filling it up until the pressure in the balloon was the same as in the bottle, and then it stopped (remember, everything in nature and science will go until there is equilibrium, or it is the same).
