Earth Science Projects Water Can Cut
Earth science projects are a lot of fun. In this project you will show how water can change what a place looks like. How does it do that? Well it cuts... No, water doesn't pick up a knife and start slicing through a mountain – by running down the same spot all the time it slowly “cuts” through the soil and rocks and changes what the landscape looks like. Valleys are made and depending on how steep the original mountain was and what type of rock the water is running over, will depend on the shape of the valley that is formed. It is going to be up to you to figure out what type of valley is formed in different circumstances. Sound like fun??? Let's do science...
The project – step by step
The Question Why are there different shaped valleys?
The Hypothesis The way the water flows, which depends on the steepness of the slope it is running down, as well as what the water runs over (i.e. what type of rock or soil) will determine what the valley looks like.
The Experiments
Making valleys
Why this experiment? In this experiment, you will build models or different slopes and then using water “make a valley”. So by doing this experiment, you will see exactly what happens in nature, but on a much bigger scale.
The Conclusion Different slopes and types of soil or rock will result in different shaped valleys. As to what those shapes are is up to you to find out and report in your display.
For a bit of a "twist" in this project check out another one of our earth science projects.
