Elementary Science
Background
Just because this is entitled elementary science, it does not mean that it is only for elementary school. It means that basic science is used to come to some interesting conclusions about beans drinking! Let's do science...
The Experiment
In this experiment, you are going to do some elementary science by growing some beans, and then watering them with different liquids and so finding out how this affects their growth. The Aim To find out if watering bean plants with different liquids will affect the way they grow. Equipment Needed Potting soil.Small plant pots.Water.Vinegar.Baking soda.Sugar.Cola.Orange juice.Milk.Any other liquids which may be interesting to test.A ruler.Lima bean seeds (as many as you need). Method Use the potting soil and plant pots to plant the beans. Use one bean per pot. If you are going to test 7 liquids, you will need to plant 14 beans (2 per liquid). (It is always good to do experiments with more than just one test). The plants watered with just water will be your control plants.Water each of the plants every other day with the liquid they are being tested with. Mark each of the pots with what they are being watered with so that you do not get confused. Make sure the plants are watered with exactly the same amount of each of the liquids. The vinegar and baking soda need to be made into solutions. Add 25ml of baking soda or vinegar into 75ml of water (this gives you a 25% solution). Each pot should be put in the same sunny spot.Record when the plants sprout and measure their height every day. Record this in your
logbook
. Also record any changes in the plant like yellowing of leaves, drooping or the leaves are falling off.Observe the plants for as long as you can (up to two months). Results You will notice definite changes between the different plants. These all need to be recorded. The Conclusion By watering the plants with different liquids, the growth of the plants were affected.
