Meaning for earth science
The meaning for earth science can be summed up in the following sentence: “Our planet and how the ol' globe functions”.
It is a broad term that looks at subjects like:
Geology
This has mainly got to do with rocks. Yup, the hard things that wreck your lawnmower blade. But it is more than that – it is a fascinating look at how the various types of rocks are formed - whether it is from boiling lava or a whole stack of little compressed sea creatures!
It will also look at where the mountains came from. The type of rock determines the type of soil found in a particular place, which in turn, along with climate, has a say in what grows there...
Geography
How and why on earth things end up where and like do. Rivers, lakes, seas, sea currents and resulting climates and effects they have on the land around them, weather and weather patterns, to name a few, are all covered in the geographical section of earth science.
Problems such as global warming and pollution are also looked at under geography. The “acts of God” fall into this category too. Earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis, flash floods to name some of them. Geography will explain how and why these happen.
Wrapping it up...
Earth science crosses over into math, chemistry, physics and of course biology.
Earth science, in a nutshell, looks at what is happening on our planet including the normal functioning of the planet as well as the problems, that are mostly caused by man, that are affecting the planet. It also looks at the effect that man has on the planet and how our planet affects us.
