A Middle School Science Project
That Settles It!

Custom Search

As middle school science projects go – this one allows you to get your hands dirty and at the same time lets you have loads of fun. It will also show you how sediments settle out to form soil profiles. How these different layers are eroded to form different shaped valleys is also investigated.

Let's do science...

The project – step by step

The Question
How and why do soil profiles form? Why are valleys different shapes.

The Hypothesis
Because of the different weights and sizes of soil particles, they will settle out at different speeds in water to form different layers. These different layers affect the way valleys are formed when a river erodes it.

The Experiments

  • One on top of another.
  • Making valleys.

    Why these experiments?
The first experiment will show how sedimentary layers are formed and the second will show how valleys are formed. Put them together and you will have interesting results.

    The Conclusion
The different layers of soil are caused by the different size soil particles settling out at different rates (or speeds) and these layers affect how the valley is eroded.
