The project – step by step

Rainbows are very beautiful and special. They are made by something called refraction of light. It is good for you to have heard this word while you are still young, but you don't need to understand exactly how it works right now. At your age it is better for you to understand what rainbows are, by me showing you how to make one. Wow!

So lets do a science fair project about rainbows...

The Question
What are rainbows?

The Experiment

  • Colors of the rainbow

    Why this experiment?
You are going to do this science experiment so that you can understand how rainbows are made. Then you will understand a little more on what a rainbow is.

    The Conclusion
A rainbow can be made by looking at white light (check out the online science dictionary definition)through a spray of water, or through a feather, or when light passes through a cut glass or crystal ornament. So what is a rainbow? A rainbow is white light that has been broken up into seven colors.
(Can you remember the word that I spoke about at the beginning of this page that you can use to describe what happens when a rainbow is made? Take a peek at the heading of this page to remind you.)

  • Why do you think you only see a rainbow after it has rained? What else could you use to make a rainbow?

  • To find out more about why a rainbow has so many different colors and why the colors are always in the same order look at the project about refraction . You will have to ask your parents or teacher to help you understand these experiments.
